New Life For Old 'DUN'
22 - 28 December 2025. Issue 69.
This is the final weekend before the new year. Without getting into too much detail, there is quite a lot to look forward to in 2026. The feasibility study for a new airport in Kuching is expected to be completed in February, while the Borneo railway feasibility study is scheduled for July 2026. Of particular note is that, for the first time, the Malaysian government is also studying the adoption of nuclear power generation. All this studying should be a source of inspiration for Sarawakian students beginning their first degree under the Free Tertiary Education Scheme (FTES) in the new year.
In this week’s A String of Thought, I explore an alternative pathway to tertiary education: social media content creation as a possible route for social mobility. Hint: it’s not all fun and games.
On the subject of work, Malaysia continues to have a complicated love-hate relationship with migrant labour. A well-researched long-read in Sidenotes traces recent legal changes affecting migrant workers and examines their real-world impact.
And in the spirit of the holiday season, this week’s infographic takes a tongue-in-cheek look at how classic fairy tales have, for generations, quietly normalised the abuse of workers.
