Finally, after decades of countless expert proclamations, the future has finally arrived! Petroleum has finally fallen off the top spot as Sarawak’s biggest export - it is, instead, palm oil. But palm oil is not quite a new trick either, in terms of being a major export of Sarawak, and Malaysia. This week’s infographic gives some insight into the scale of the industry.
While black gold might be losing its rajah crown, the price of yellow gold has been elevated to its highest levels in the last 30 years. You might be forgiven to think that the high price of gold is the reason the revived Borneo Games decided to eliminate blowpipe shooting as an event in the upcoming meet (fewer events means fewer gold medals, after all). Alas, the removal is due to lack of participation in the sport of blowpipe shooting. I can’t imagine why blowpipe shooting is not a popular sport!
Speaking of misdirected hot air, there’s been a lot of hissing and huffing recently about what certain symbols or representations mean. My op-ed argues that such fuss over symbolism is a form of fear. Prove me wrong? First, put that blowpipe away, please!
