Sarawak Craft Council Expands
16 - 22 June 2025. Issue 42
This past week, Sarawak's cultural drumbeat was loud. From bold flavours to traditional rhythms, Sarawak found itself centre stage in a remarkable convergence of creativity and ambition. At the World National Tapas Competition held in Kuching, Miri’s own Chef Liew Kit Kiet clinched a stunning victory by reimagining Sarawak laksa as a daring chocolate-infused tapa. The capital city is (at the moment of writing) abuzz with visitors from all around the world for the Rainforest World Music Festival. The Sarawak Craft Council, now operating under a newly formalised legal mandate, will hopefully bring Sarawak crafts and artisans the respect and commercial success that they so deserve. Our cultural assets are just as important and valuable as what lie beneath the ground - developing them into commercially viable economic assets will take more than just putting things on a shelf in a shop. Dato Jacqueline Fong’s musical Dreamweaver, for example, is crossing the South China Sea to be presented in Kuala Lumpur at the end of August. For an exploration of how Sarawak can capitalise on its intellectual assets, read this week’s op-ed in A String of Thoughts at the bottom of the page.
